During a spring day in 1987, Robert Kilgour, then 30, arrived in the Scottish coastal town of Kirkcaldy, parking near blossoming cherry trees to inspect a historic hotel. The Victorian structure stood four stories tall with darkened sandstone walls. Kilgour, an expressive Scottish entrepreneur with natural storytelling abilities, already managed an Edinburgh hotel but sought to expand into real estate.
